Please note: To accommodate Parent / Teacher Interviews, both days will operate on a shortened schedule so that all classes will finish at 12:10pm.  See schedules below.

Also, just a reminder that Full Disclosure is Monday, November 21st.  Attached is another copy of Full Disclosure on the Ontario Student Transcript regulation.  If withdrawal is to take place, the Academy needs to be informed by Monday, November 21st.  After that time, the regulation will come into effect, and the transcript will reflect this, one way or another.  There is nothing that we will be able to do to circumvent this requirement, as informed by our Ministry of Education inspector during our most recent inspection.

On a different note, November 18th is now a Professional Development Days; no school for students.  The November 18th Shovel and Spoon afternoon (for the Food & Nutrition and the Health Care classes) had been rescheduled to Wednesday November 23rd.

Should you have any questions or concerns about any of this information, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Nov. 8th, 2011 – Statefarm Cheque Granting Pics

Statefarm grants Evergreen & the YMCA Academy a cheque for $39,090

Evergreen and The YMCA Academy are recent recipients of a state farm grant to fund the creation and implementation of the Eco-Ambassador program. Between September 2011 and June 2012, the YMCA Eco-Ambassadors project will engage our entire student body in a series of hands-on environmental education workshops and greening activities.  Each of the youth participants will engage in service learning in 3 subject areas:

  • Active transportation
  • Food systems
  • Urban ecology

Youth will collaborate with teachers and Evergreen staff to identify goals and activities for each module that match Ontario curriculum requirements with hands-on environmental opportunities.  Building on the momentum of 3 years of successful collaboration, the YMCA Eco-Ambassador program will generate teachable moments within YMCA Academy classrooms, and equip youth with the knowledge and skills to become ambassadors for sustainable living in their families and communities.

Between our hike through the Brickworks quarry and a workshop on bike tire repair, Statefarm representatives took a moment to give Academy the GIANT cheque.

Nov. 8th, 2011 – CPR and First Aid Reminder

Dear Parents / Guardians,

Just a reminder that tomorrow (Wednesday – November 9th) is the CPR and First Aid training from 9:30am to 3:45pm.

The cost of the cpr ottawa training is covered by The Academy; however, if we had not heard from you by October 31st (per earlier e-mail sent on Oct 25th) and your child/student misses the training, you will be invoiced for the cost of the missed sessions.  This also applies to students who are significantly late for the training and cannot be certified and/or students who leave without permission before the training is complete.  We will be contacting all families tomorrow (the day of the training) to confirm and advise of any absences as well as all unauthorized departures during the training.  These families will then receive an invoice for the training missed.

Please contact the school at (416) 928-0124 Ext. 0 if you have any questions or concerns regarding tomorrow.  Please note: A student’s absence on this day may negatively affect the student’s grades, if their course curriculum is tied to the successful completion of the training.

Oct. 31st, 2011 – Evergreen ‘Eco Ambassadors’

Yesterday, a group of Academy students visited Evergreen Brickworks in the Don Valley. After a beautiful walk to a lookout point overlooking the city of Toronto and some beautiful fall foliage, students headed to the workshop to and learned to repair flat tires on bikes. The activities were part of the Active Transportation unit in the ‘Eco Ambassadors’ program, a partnership between the YMCA Academy and Evergreen Brickworks with generous support from Statefarm.
