Oct. 29th, 2010 – Halloween for Hunger Campaign

YMCA Academy students recently attended We Day in Toronto.  It left them feeling inspired and energized to make positive changes.  As part of Free the Children’s Halloween for Hunger Campaign, Academy students did a food drive this week at 42 Charles Street East.  On Friday October 29th, we delivered the food down to Union Station, where magician Scott Hammell will be spending five days and nights in a plexi-glass box to raise awareness about food security issues.   The hope is that the students will collect enough goods to make Scott “disappear,” and to show that ending hunger is not magic, but that we all have a contribution to make.  The canned goods will be donated by Free the Children to the Daily Bread Food Bank.  Thanks to everyone who supported us in this collection!

Oct. 27th, 2010 – Pics from the Gardiner Museum

A midnight bell tolls high in the tower of a dark castle.  The year is 960 and gargoyles rule the land.  Fast-forward over 1,000 years, students in the grade 10 art class learned about Medieval art today at the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art and worked with a professional artist to create their own mythical creatures.  Some grew animal-like sharp claws and teeth and others sprouted wings and horns.  The little critters will be fired in the kiln at the museum and students will return in a few weeks to apply colour glazes as the final touch.

If you are walking around downtown Toronto sometime soon, especially around the University of Toronto campus, take a look into the corners and around the door-frames for replicas of Medieval gargoyles.  But be sure to watch your back…

Oct. 14th, 2010 – Curriculum Night & Open House

Dear Parents / Guardians,

Just a reminder that the YMCA Academy Curriculum Night + Open House is next Wednesday (Oct 20th):

Curriculum Night

This will be a general overview of information related to planning for post-secondary education, secondary school graduation requirements (including community involvement requirements), ILC (Independent Learning Centre) courses, and Cooperative Education.  We will also speak about IEPs and the IPRC process.  All parents, guardians, and current students are welcome.

OPEN HOUSE

This is an opportunity to present information about the Academy to prospective parents and students (not our current families).  We are asking for your support in passing the word on to at least one family that you know whom you think might benefit from enrolling at the Academy.  We have openings for the second semester of this academic year, as well as next year.
