Oct. 12th, 2010 – TTC Photo ID’s tomorrow

Dear Parents / Guardians,

Just a reminder that TTC Photo Day at The YMCA Academy is tomorrow:  Wednesday, October 13th @ 10:30am – 11:15am.  The price of the 2010 / 2011 card will be $5.25 per student.

Overview

Student fare privileges are only available to teenage students who are 19 years of age or under at the commencement of the school year, effective September 7, 2010.  Students must attend regular full-time classes at approved schools up to and including the high school level in Toronto.

General Information & Requirements

  1. To qualify, students must be 19 years of age or under as of September 7th, 2010, and be in full-time attendance at an eligible elementary or secondary school.
  1. Students must provide proof-of-age (e.g. birth certificate or other official document). Student Activity Cards are not acceptable proof of age.
  1. High school students with a current Student Activity Card that has a photo, may receive their TTC Discount Card on the spot. Otherwise the card will be mailed back to the school.  (allow 1 – 10 days)
  1. The card remains the property of the TTC and is subject to confiscation if the holder violates any TTC By-laws or alters or abuses this ID.  The card will not be returned and you may not apply for a new one.

Students who miss the session tomorrow can ask me for an Application for 2010-2011 TTC Student Fare Photo Identification Card, which they can take to the Photo Facility at Sherbourne Station (at Bloor) at their own time.  The Photo Facility is open Monday to Friday from 3:00pm – 7:00pm; Saturdays from 10:00am – 4:00pm.

Oct. 9th, 2010 – Reference Library Field Trip

Dear Parents / Guardians,

Just a reminder that the Toronto Reference Library – On-line periodical and journal research workshop field trip is tomorrow (October 12th).

Purpose of the excursion:  Students will participate in a workshop presented by the manager of periodicals regarding the on-line collection of journals and periodicals.  Students will learn how to formulate research questions, how to navigate on-line systems in searching for articles in journals and how to work with library staff when using the system for research.  This is a mandatory excursion for all senior courses.

Requirements for Participants

Requirements for library card:

o       One piece of photo identification (health card, drivers license); and

o       One piece of identification with student’s name and address (bank statement, report card or other school document, mobile phone bill)

Activity Cost: No fee

Clothing and equipment: Comfortable and weather-appropriate clothes and shoes

Permission forms were handed out last week, which require your signature prior to their participation.  You may also email your permission directly to the school to bonita.ip@ymcagta.org

Oct. 8th, 2010 – Grade 11 English Goes Hollywood

Lights, camera, action!

This week in grade 11 English, students have been working on PSA’s for Peace- short peace-related public service announcements that will be shown at the YMCA of Greater Toronto’s Peace Week ceremony on November 23rd, 2010. Students experimented with green screen technology while shooting Academy students scripts promoting peace with the environment.
