Oct. 31st, 2011 – Halloween for Hunger Campaign

YMCA Academy Beyond the Classroom, Community

On Friday, October 28th, the YMCA Academy students participated in ‘Halloween for Hunger’, a food drive initiative by Free the Children, with the goal of supporting local food banks. Academy staff and students collected over 200 non-perishable food items. Students who participated were able to ‘buy out’ of their 4th period classes to participate in a teachers vs. students dodgeball game. The teachers were no match for the spirited students, who managed to beat them in all three games. The food items collected will be brought to the local firehall by the ‘Me to We’ club students.

Oct. 28th, 2011 – Career Mash 2011 Field Trip

YMCA Academy English and Humanities, Experiential Learning

On Friday October 28th, the Academy Careers, Health Care, Media Arts and Science classes will be attending Career Mash, a hybrid career information fair and technology showcase at Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall. The event will feature a panel discussion with three of Toronto’s freshest young tech leaders, and an expo with 50+ booths from different employers and post-secondary programs (including colleges, universities, and apprenticeships) in the technology realm.

Please join us at The YMCA Academy for

PARENT / TEACHER INTERVIEW NIGHTS 2011

  • Grades 9 & 10, Wednesday, November 16th, 2:00 – 8:00 P.M.
  • Grades 11 & 12, Thursday, November 17th, 2:00 – 8:00 P.M.

You have an opportunity to meet with your child’s teachers in a 20-minute group interview format.  Please call (416) 928-0124 ext. 0 to reserve a time.

Please note: To accommodate Parent / Teacher interviews, both days will operate on a shortened schedule so that all classes will finish at 12:10pm.  See schedules below.

Wednesday November 16th

  • 09:30am – 10:45am   Period 1
  • 10:45am – 10:55am   Break
  • 10:55am – 12:10pm   Period 2  

Thursday November 17th

  • 09:30am – 10:45am   Period 3

Also, Full Disclosure is Monday, November 21st.  Attached is a copy of Full Disclosure on the Ontario Student Transcript regulation.  If withdrawal is to take place, the Academy needs to be informed by Monday, November 21st.  After that time, the regulation will come into effect, and the transcript will reflect this, one way or another.  There is nothing that we will be able to do to circumvent this requirement, as informed by our Ministry of Education inspector during our most recent inspection.

Oct. 26th, 2011 – Open Studio: Various Projects

YMCA Academy Arts, Beyond the Classroom, Student Spotlight

It was truly an open studio today in the art room at the Academy!  Eight artists were busy at work on a variety of projects including acrylic painting, Japanese calligraphy, beading, stenciling, painting pumpkins, pottery designing and costume-making (oh, and a math culminating project).  Open Studio runs every Wednesday from 4 – 5pm in the art or math room.  Drop by, say hello and be creative!
