ACADEMIC TEACHER (Mathematics)
(Part Time Hourly Contract) Salary Grade: 8
Effective: February 4, 2013
Reports to: Head of School, YMCA Academy
Location: Central YMCA, Toronto

Nature and Scope:
Inspired and supported by the YMCA of Greater Toronto, The YMCA Academy is a small, innovative secondary school flourishing in downtown Toronto. Created to respond to unique learning needs, the school integrates the Ontario Ministry of Education’s secondary school curriculum with practical life skills. Our personal differentiated approach, specialized programs and individualized use of assistive technology are ideally suited to those students with learning disabilities or learning style differences. The Academy embodies perfectly the vision of the YMCA of Greater Toronto.

The Academic Teacher will provide part time instruction for Grade 12 Mathematics – College level, and one additional course at the grade 9 or 10 level.

Responsibilities:

Works with students to generate energy, enthusiasm, curiosity, and engagement; Provides the support and expertise to inspire students to set goals for themselves and then work to attain these goals; Works with parents and workplace mentors to build support for the students and their needs.

FACILITATE LEARNING

Works with student interests/projects, integrates the Ontario secondary school curriculum while ensuring that students have the requisite foundational skills to succeed with the challenges of the new curriculum; Skilled in working with small groups of students to meet learning goals, while maintaining an appropriate level of control and organization in the process; Able to provide feedback to students about their individual and group functioning.

ADMINISTRATION

Timely completion of all documentation required by the YMCA Academy, the Ministry of Education and by the YMCA of Greater Toronto.

OTHER

Participates in YMCA Academy co-curricular activities and philanthropic activities of the YMCA of Greater Toronto (e.g. Annual Strong Kids campaign; Homework Club; social/skills after-school clubs).

Models appropriate behaviours to staff in line with our Mission, Vision and Values; establishes rapport and maintains effective relationship building behaviours with staff and members. Represents the YMCA and the Association in a professional manner.

Understands and integrates the value of philanthropy and volunteerism and imparts this knowledge and belief upon staff, volunteers and members.

Other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • In good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers
  • Demonstrated experience in and enthusiasm for working with youth with learning disabilities, social/emotional needs, and/or language processing challenges who are under-performing or who are disengaged from their learning process
  • Minimum of Special Education Part I
  • Knowledge of current curricular trends, use of manipulatives, and assistive technologies
  • Experience in non-traditional teaching environments and an appreciation for teaching the whole person
  • Solid interpersonal skills coupled with ingenuity and flexibility for responding to the multiple demands of students, parents, colleagues, partners, sponsors, supporting YMCA program staff; understanding of parent as customer
  • Able to work within the complexities of a large, not-for-profit charitable organization
  • Well developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff and volunteers; excellent written communication skills
  • Experience and sensitivity in dealing with members of different cultural and racial backgrounds, including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity
