Admissions Process

The Academy admits young men and women in grades 9-12 who have learning disabilities and/or who seek a smaller learning environment, individualized teacher attention or an alternative learning experience.

Since the Admission procedure is competitive, parents are encouraged to begin the process as early as possible.


Visit:
Both student and parent/guardian should visit the school during school hours. Please call 416-928-0124 Ext.0 for an appointment.


Admissions Application Package:
Please download, complete and submit the Admissions Application Package.

The Application Package includes:

  • Application forms
  • Application fee ($250 dollars payable to the YMCA of Greater Toronto)
  • Recent photograph (for files)
  • Copy of all psychological/educational assessments
  • Most recent report plus final June report cards from past two years
  • School transcripts


Interview: Upon receipt of a completed application, the applicant will be contacted for an interview.

Applicants are interviewed throughout the year for start dates in:

  • September (1st semester)
  • February (2nd semester).


Academy Program Visit: Student will be invited to attend a full day of classes at the Academy with his/her grade-level peers.


Interviews:
Student and parent/guardian will meet with both our in-school counselor and our admissions department. Interviews are informal. The purpose of the interview is to get to know the individual, his/her values, aspirations, passions, goals and learning needs to be sure that The Academy is the right educational fit. During the interview process dates for acceptance will be established. Interview questions can include:

  • What are your strengths?
  • What are your weaknesses?
  • What do you need to be successful?
  • Describe your LD and/or learning needs.


Assessments:
Students will complete a literacy and math assessment administered at The Academy. These assessments will be used to generate appropriate educational placements. The assessment takes 1.5-2 hours.

It includes:

  • A creative writing piece
  • The CARA (Canadian Adult Reading Assessment) to determine: Grade 7/8 reading comprehension competency
  • A Math assessment: Grade 7/8 Ministry of Education expectations


Acceptance:
Upon acceptance you will receive a phone call from the Assistant Head of School followed by a letter of Acceptance. Acceptance is conditional on performance during the first semester of placement at The Academy.
