A message from the head of school

I have spent over 30 years working in alternative, independent, private and public institutions, having focused my career on Arts education, curriculum development and experiential learning to meet the needs of all learners. In my time at The Academy, I have witnessed the following: The Academy is a uniquely impressive school, one that profoundly improves the quality of life of its students, and promises to prepare students as they move on successfully to post-secondary studies or meaningful work placements. The creative and nurturing teachers here have taken approved Ontario Ministry of Education courses and incorporated them into unique programs to meet the needs of our neurodiverse student population. Our goal is to give our students the necessary skills to graduate from The Academy with their Ontario Secondary School Diploma or Certificate in hand, ready to face the challenges of university, college or vocational pursuits.

How We Teach

Experiential learning

Using a progressive or “inquiry-based” approach, our teachers place our students’ interests and ideas at the heart of the learning experience. Instead of the lessons being driven by predetermined pathways, our progressive curricula are “emergent”, with learning activities shaped by students’ questions about the world. Instead of starting with academic concepts and then tying it to everyday experience, progressive methods begin with everyday experience and work back to an academic lesson. Our teachers provide materials, experiences, tools and resources to help students investigate a topic or issue. Our students are encouraged to explore, reflect on their findings, and discuss answers or solutions while meeting the demands of academic rigour.

Individual Attention

Small class sizes

Our classes have a 1:8 ratio for middle school and a 1:13 ratio for high school. This allows our teachers to be more hands-on with our students, catering to their unique learning styles, abilities, and needs.

REAL-LIFE LEARNING

Field trips & extracurriculars

We believe learning happens everywhere. Our program combines regular excursions—from exploring scientific concepts at local labs to engaging with history at museums—with a wide range of clubs and after-school programs to build social skills and explore student interests outside the core curriculum.
