Academy Program Overview

The YMCA Academy is a Ministry of Education accredited high school in downtown Toronto serving youth with learning disabilities and learning-style differences.

The YMCA Academy is a community offering a safe and
supportive learning environment that includes:

  • Individualized Spec-Ed support & Assistive Technologies
  • Small class sizes (averaging 8 students)
  • Applied & Academic Streams (C & M level courses)
  • Online wireless environment with laptops for every student
  • Workplace internships & Co-op program
  • Outdoor education & year-round fitness membership
  •   Academic Streams; applied & academic streams (C& M level courses)
    Co-op Credits; practical work experiences available at seniour level
    Small Class Size; average class size of 8 students
    Students Computers and Technology; wireless laptops for every student
    Classroom Computers and Technology; equiped with editing suites, LCD projectors & Smartboards
      Resource; individualized assistance with a focus on skill building
    Remediation; non-credit class support to remediate gaps in language and mathematics skills
    Assistive Technology; available and directly taught to all students
      Exchange; participate in the YMCA’s Youth Exchanges Canada program & travel to another province or territory
    CPR and First Aid certification; staff and students are certified in CPR and first aid yearly

      Guidance and Career Planning Counsellor; assists students in navigating secondary and post secondary options
    On-site Life skills Counselling; confidential counselling services
      Afterschool Academic Support; staff supervised homework club
    Clubs including; Drama, Fashion Show, Student council, Badminton, Dodge ball, Open studio and Band
    Breakfast Club; breakfast and healthy snacks provided to all students
      VOICE Assemblies & TAP (Taking a Pause) gatherings; students come together with staff facilitators to exchange ideas

      Academic Facilities; wireless classrooms with LCD projectors, Smart-boards, hands-on manipulatives
    Computer lab; dedicated computer lab for media production
    Science lab; state of the art lab
    HFR – YMCA Membership; full year YMCA Fitness and Recreation centre membership at any YMCA worldwide
      Outdoor Leadership and Skills Training; overnight trips to YMCA Camps Pinecrest &/or Cedar Glen
    Evergreen Brickworks; funding through Statefarm provides Academy students the opportunity to become Eco-Ambassadors. Programming on the topics of Active Transport, Urban Agriculture and Food systems happens 2 afternoons a month at the Brickworks site.
    Evergreen Downsview; students tree plant twice a year
